RC conducted a series of electrical studies to identify the potential operational impacts of the Block Island Wind project on the existing electrical transmission and distribution systems.
Load flow, short circuit and dynamic stability modeling indicated no adverse impacts to the renewable energy injection. In addition, transient switching studies assessed wind turbine control and protection interactions that could affect relay settings or equipment ratings.
Our engineers examined temporary over-voltages, transient recovery voltages, harmonics, lightning protection and ground bank sizing. Our work required close coordination with the developer, the utility, and the turbine vender to evaluate ground bank sizing, voltages, and other equipment adjustments that could be needed. The highly scrutinized project successfully facilitated safe operation of the turbines and uninterrupted power delivery to the submarine cables and distribution grid.
