Revolutionizing Utility Operations with Cloud-Based Meter Data Management

Enabling flexibility, scalability and streamlined operations

Challenge

As part of its Connect Up program to give customers more control over the energy use, Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD), the second largest publicly owned utility in Washington state, required a meter data management system (MDMS) with advanced security to optimize and track data from approximately 365,000 electric meters and 23,000 water meters.

Solution

Snohomish PUD made a pioneering move by opting for TRC’s Managed Software as a Service (MSaaS), making it the first North American utility to embrace a cloud-based delivery model for Siemens IP MDMS. The cloud-based solution provided the flexibility to handle the utility’s growing meter count effortlessly. MSaaS ensured robust data security and privacy, safeguarding customer information without having to made additional IT upgrades. Our team led the integration and continues to manage  day-to-day operations, including software updates, data security and cloud services management, reducing the utility’s operational burden.

Results

With TRC’s expertise and the cloud-based MDMS solution in place, Snohomish PUD is achieving the following outcomes:

Enhanced Customer Experience: Customers have greater control over their energy usage, access to detailed data and flexible billing options, improving overall satisfaction.

Cost Savings: Reduced IT infrastructure costs and streamlined operations contribute to significant cost savings for the utility.

Environmental Impact: Fewer PUD vehicles on the road are reducing carbon emissions, aligning with the utility’s commitment to sustainability.

“TRC has been a strong implementation partner helping us manage the complexity that comes with maintaining and monitoring an enterprise-level Meter Data Management System. Leveraging TRC’s expertise enables the District to extend beyond just AMI billing and provide many of the benefits that come with a next-generation AMI system.”  –Adam Peretti, PUD Manager AMI Technologies, and Jason Bruss, PUD Manager ITS Application.
