Sustainability Consulting and Reporting

Challenge

Waupaca Foundry, Inc., a Hitachi Metals Group company, is the largest producer of gray, ductile, austempered ductile and compacted graphite iron in the world. Waupaca had programs in place to minimize the impact of their operations on the environment and had a mature environmental management system, certified to ISO 14001.

Waupaca selected TRC as the partner to facilitate the development of a cohesive sustainability strategy that incorporated social, economic and environmental aspects across the value chain, integrated their existing EMS and reflected their commitment to sustainable business practices.

Solution

Critical objectives were responsiveness to customers and assurance that sustainability data and claims were credible, quantifiable and transparent. Utilizing a step-wise process TRC ensured a successful implementation and, together with an internal cross-functional team, developed the company’s first Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) report for external disclosure. TRC was subsequently retained to validate the environmental data and update the report.

The project included benchmarking internal and external stakeholders, establishing the critical few key performance indicators (KPIs), setting targets and objectives, establishing implementation procedures and developing the company’s first sustainability disclosure through the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards.

TRC utilized a workshop format, with a combination of presentations and interactive exercises, to engage participants and drive the process forward. We facilitated a materiality assessment with a cross-functional senior management team, conducted a stakeholder mapping exercise with the team, benchmarked competitors and clients, set targets and objectives and then drafted the first report for publication. Additionally, TRC provided awareness training on ISO 14001:2015 changes and implications for the KPI targets and reporting.

Result

Waupaca now has an industry leading sustainability program, with systems in place to improve performance and regularly communicate risks and opportunities to internal and external stakeholders
