Massachusetts Ports Authority (Massport)
Since 2021, TRC has supported the Massachusetts Ports Authority (Massport) – a public authority which owns, operates and manages Boston Logan International Airport, Worcester Regional Airport, Lawrence G. Hanscom Field, Conley Container Terminal and Flynn Cruiseport Boston – in its ambitious transition to a clean and sustainable energy future. We provide Massport with end-to-end services from strategy and energy planning to project implementation and operations management. Our energy transition work for the agency includes:
- Energy Demand Modeling to help plan for long-term grid infrastructure expansion as well as short-term solutions that alleviate constraints on the grid and decarbonize its operations.
- Electrification Support Services for Boston Logan International Airport, helping the airport replace its fleet of fossil-fuel powered ground support equipment (GSE) with zero-emission technology.
- Sustainability Planning including the development of Massport’s Sustainability Report, which tracks the goals and metrics established in the authority’s Airport Sustainability Management Plan.
Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro)
Since 2011, TRC has been a trusted energy advisor and prime consultant in implementing an agency-wide energy management program for Metro, the second-largest transportation system in the United States by ridership. In 2020, our scope of work was expanded to include Climate and Resiliency Services, supporting Metro’s goals to improve air quality, protect resources, reduce waste, and create connected communities in LA.
TRC’s engineers, scientists and subject matter experts act as Metro’s owner representatives, reviewing capital renovation and retrofit plans to align with short and long-term energy and climate goals. TRC has contributed to the successful implementation of energy and climate program efforts at Metro including:
- Strategic Planning for energy efficiency, EV charging infrastructure, fleet electrification, emissions calculation, and the development of an energy master plan.
- Feasibility Analysis for microgrid integration, battery energy storage systems planning for rail and facilities and renewable energy generation capital projects.
- Policy Support for transitioning fleets in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Engineering and Design Support including site assessments at maintenance facilities to determine optimal locations for EV chargers, considering accessibility, existing infrastructure and electrical capacity.
Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT)
In 2024. TRC was awarded a multi-year contract to develop the MassDOT Climate Program Management Office. We will develop a master project management plan that will outline the comprehensive strategies, methodologies and actions required to implement and track the Agency’s progress towards their climate goals. This plan will serve as a blueprint for the systematic management and on-going prioritization of client-related activities — confirming that every step taken contributes meaningfully to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving stated carbon reduction goals.
TRC previously led a Resiliency Task Force for MassDOT to develop a long-term strategic plan for resiliency efforts. For this project, our team developed a self-assessment tool for transportation agencies to benchmark current resiliency-related practices and projects and identify new opportunities to advance the maturity level of adaptation and preparedness capabilities.
